An online devotional for writers
Your sister church here in Babylon sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark. (1 Peter 5:13, NLT)
A ghostwriter is a professional who is tapped to write content but is not publicly credited for their work.
It’s not uncommon for a busy professional or a celebrity to hire a ghostwriter to write a book. But in addition, plenty of businesses hire a ghostwriter – also called a freelance content writer – to produce any kind of content: blog posts, video scripts, web pages, white articles, and eBooks, to name a few.
Why do clients hire a ghostwriter?
Peter helped build the church in Rome from 42 – 67 AD. As numbers of believers grew – along with the threat of Roman persecution – leaders asked for the story of Jesus be recorded. But Peter was busy leading a new church plant in a hostile Roman environment, so it makes sense that he’d use a scribe.
Plus, there’s a good chance that Peter could not write. Acts 4:13 describes him as “unschooled,” translated as “illiterate.”
Tradition holds that the Apostle Peter tapped John Mark, his spiritual son (1 Peter 5:13), to record his teachings. Mark was well-educated and had writing skills (Acts 12:12-14). Plus he served alongside Peter in Rome.
Just like leaders today, Peter used a ghostwriter to save time and to tap into skills he did not possess.
With a caveat: while ghostwriters today may remain anonymous to the public, Mark’s name is very clearly associated with the book he recorded for Peter.
A ghostwriter writes content for others.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the opportunity to help leaders by serving as a content writer in their stead. Show me how to share a client’s message with clarity and integrity.
In Jesus’s name, Amen.
